Iron is essential for living!

چکیده
Iron as an element is a double-edged sword, essential for living but also potentially toxic through the generation of oxidative stress. The recent study by Chen and colleagues in Critical Care reminds us of this elegantly. In a mouse model of acute lung injury, they showed that silencing hepcidin (the master regulator of iron metabolism) locally in airway epithelial cells aggravates lung injury by increasing the release of iron from alveolar macrophages, which in turn enhances pulmonary bacterial growth and reduces the macrophages' killing properties. This work underscores that hepcidin acts not only systematically (as a hormone) but also locally for iron metabolism regulation. This opens areas of research for sepsis treatment but also for iron deficiency or anaemia treatment, since the local and systemic iron regulation appear to be independent.

Nickel is an essential element for all living organisms such as microorganisms, plants and animals. When nickel concentration exceeds the necessary concentration, could be toxic, and likewise causes adverse effects in living organisms. In this study, following determining nickel LC50-96h for common carp (Cyprinus carpio), nickel sub-lethal treatments including 0 (control), 0.055, 0.275, 0.572, ...
متن کاملSiderophore and Its Applications in the Field of Bioenvironmental Researches
Iron, one of the essential micronutrients, is needed for electron transport and metabolic processes in almost all living organisms. The ferric form (Fe3+) of iron is insoluble in nature and inaccessible at physiological pH (7.35–7.40). Under iron-limited conditions, metal-chelating agents such as siderophores are synthesized by many bacteria and a few fungi. Siderophores have a high affinity fo...

Iron is an essential element required for development and survival of all living organisms. In fetuses, maternofetal iron transfer across the placenta is essential for growth and development. In neonates, efficient intestinal iron absorption is required to scavenge as much iron as possible from the low-iron-content milk. During these periods, efficient iron mobilization is ensured by the downre...
متن کاملAn Endoperoxide Reactivity-Based FRET Probe for Ratiometric Fluorescence Imaging of Labile Iron Pools in Living Cells
Iron is essential for sustaining life, as its ability to cycle between multiple oxidation states is critical for catalyzing chemical transformations in biological systems. However, without proper regulation, this same redox capacity can trigger oxidative stress events that contribute to aging along with diseases ranging from cancer to cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. Despite its ...
متن کاملA FRET Probe for Ratiometric Fluorescence Imaging of Labile Iron Pools in Living Cells
Iron is an essential trace element for all living organisms, and it is also the most plentiful transition metal in the human body [14]. Due to the ability to cycle between multiple oxidation states, iron plays a key role in biological systems, spanning nucleotide synthesis to oxygen transport to electron transfer [5-7]. However, this same potent redox activity makes iron in unregulated forms po...
